The real sport is here in the Savoie. This morning we went to Champagny le Haut for the annual descent. This is when they bring the first of the summers cheeses down from the alpine pasturages to be sold. It is a fantastic sight with hundreds of people turning up early on the Sunday morning to watch as the bergers bring the cheeses down on old pine sleds. Where are they?
Ah – here they come – bringing home the cheese
Unpacking the sleds.
Time to buy some.
And now for some lunch.
The cheese was really light and fresh – straight from the alpine pastures where it was made to the table in just a few hours.
